Things to do before you die:

  • enroll in a basic computer skills class and make a wiki and insert a bulleted list like the one you are reading right now
  • dance to the soulja boy dance in the middle of a public location
  • meet an amish person
  • spend an entire day as the life of a hobo
  • shop at a grocery store with a bikini on
  • then do everything over again

Week 1: Mrs. Miner introduced us to a very educational website packed with information. It has so much useful information on everything about computer applications. Our first task was to take a look at the Microsoft Word tutorials and even though I already knew many things that the tutorial was teaching, I learned a couple of small things that may make my life a little easier (such as insert and overtype mode and after seeing this tutorial made me realize why my computer was being different only to see it was in overtype mode all along)

Week 2: Mrs. Miner introduced us to RSS like netvibes. On one page, there could be lots of information that you choose to display on there. iGoogle is another example. A video on youtube helped me to view wikis a little differently. Instead of having to send information to everyone, one could put information on a page once and be done.

Week 3: We started making a movie on Windows Moving Maker. Mrs. Miner had us search for uncopyrited music and pictures on the internet on our interest and likes. We learned the difference between the timeline and storyboard. Then we made the projects as a movie file and uploaded it to our class wiki and presented to everyone in the class. Some people also did narrations with a feature on the program.

Week 4: On our fourth and final week, we were given the option of excel charting, newsletter, publishing, etc. I chose to use Microsoft Publishing and use a story on the internet to make a sample newsletter.

Why did you select this Program?  Did it relate to your course work or personal interests?  Be specific.

I selected this program because I wanted to get more of a feel to computers and what they are capable of doing for you. This course related to my school work because as a student at the International Academy, we need to be able to work well with others. And proper communication is key to getting the job done. We can do this by making a wiki so that instead of sending information to everyone in the group, putting information on one page so everyone can see.

What did you like best about this Enrichment?  Be specific.

I loved using Windows Movie Maker. The whole concept of windows movie making stimulates creativity and lets us show our personalities through a visual representation. Mrs. Miner really let us use our minds and free will to create a movie. I learned websites where I can import uncopyrited music.

I also loved the free time Mrs. Miner gave us. Sitting on a chair looking at a computer screen for four hours straight is not the easiest thing to do. She gave us lots of breaks after she lectured us and it gave us a chance to cool off and start again when we’re prepared. She had a high tolerance when we played games after we were done with our work.

What did you like least?  Be specific.

I did not enjoy going to Atomiclearning.com. This is a site where you can see and hear tutorials for all kinds of computer things. Although it is very educational listening to the monotonous narrator and the poor footage of the tutorial was such a drag. Luckily, we did not have to do many of those.

Would you recommend that this Enrichment be offered again?  Why or why not?

Yes, I would recommend that this Enrichment be offered again. Computer skills are essential to making it through life. They create so many more efficient paths so you can get the job done easier, faster, and looking more professional. Especially in your highschool career, homework, groupwork, or any kind of assignment may require the computer and the application of computer sikills.
